Edd founded Beyond the Porch Productions in 2013 alongside longtime friend and collaborator Alex Bell. Edd has lived in Los Angeles for nearly a decade, but his life (thus far) afforded him the opportunity to grow roots - and unroot - in Germany, Minnesota, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Florida, and Colorado before enrolling at the USC School of Cinematic Arts in Los Angeles. For that reason, Edd takes a chameleon-like approach to the question, “Where are you from?”
Despite a transient childhood, Edd claims Michigan as his home. In the summer of 2014, Edd led a team of filmmakers to the Upper Peninsula of his home state where they created Beyond the Porch’s debut feature film Superior under his direction. Superior received critical success, screening in film festivals nationwide and appearing on the big screen in over 40 cities before being acquired by Gravitas Ventures and released nationwide (and in Poland!) in 2016.
As an athlete and ardent sports fan, Edd finds incredible parallels between the film production and sports world. His favorite aspect of any film project is assembling a team of talented people to bring a story to life. According to Edd, “The best thing I can ever do as a director is surround myself with talented people and get out of their way.”
When not on set or developing new BTP projects, Edd can most likely be found at a concert venue enjoying live music or on skates at a nearby ice rink trying not to get any more teeth knocked out.
Having already flip-flopped from concert pianist to professional NBA player to anesthesiologist, Stephen knew that at the unforgiving age of 13, the next career path he chose would be the one he’d have to stick with for life. Fortunately for the Beyond the Porch team, Stephen decided to take his talents into production.
Filmmaking allows Stephen the opportunity to live vicariously through other people’s careers; be it NBA player Carmelo Anthony, Mt. Everest climber Paul Fejtek, or competitive dodgeball player White Goodman, Stephen loves the opportunity to tell stories of interesting places and people around the world.
They say big things come in small packages, which – at 6’4” – puts Stephen at a significant disadvantage from the rest of the population. But despite this setback, Stephen has forged ahead, finding success as a film producer. He enjoys shepherding an idea from infancy to adulthood, at which point, like any proud parent, he can only step back and hope it makes a lot of money.
Through filmmaking, Stephen has had the privilege of getting to collaborate with generous & talented individuals around the World. With each new project and challenge, Stephen most enjoys meeting - and collaborating with - the new faces that come with it.
Alex fell in love with movie making at an early age when he got ahold of the family video camera. His fascination with filming and editing led him to the USC School of Cinematic arts where he honed his craft alongside a strong community of creatives. After graduating, Alex turned his focus to physical production and worked on music videos, branded content, and documentaries in collaboration with BTP Media co-founder Edd Benda.
Alex made his feature film debut as the Director of Photography and Producer on Superior. Despite having a California address, he spends a great deal of time working all over the globe. He produced a music video in Iceland, taught a film seminar in the Czech Republic, and embedded with The Salvation Army covering relief efforts for Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma.
Growing up as an Eagle Scout in the Seattle area, Alex enjoys spending time exploring and photographing the great outdoors. When not working on sets, you can find him singing 4-part harmonies with the world-renowned Westminster Chorus.
